Malvern's buzzards statue will be lit up at night

Buzzards to soar day and night
MALVERN’S iconic buzzards will soar day and night after a decision to illuminate them with floodlights.
Members of Malvern Town Council have voted to illuminate the statue, in Rosebank Gardens, between dusk and midnight every evening using energy-efficient LED lighting.
Coun Hannah Campbell said requests to have the birds lit had come from members of the public.
“The costs with the right technology will be minimal and the benefits to the town will be great,” she said.
It is expected to cost about £1,500 to light the statue.

It is expected to cost about £1,500 to light the statueHow come? If you light it for an average of 5 hours / night that amounts to over 1800 hours per annum, but let's say 2000. Even of they use a kilowatt of power to light it, that's only 2000 kw/h's per annum which at about 12p per kw/h works out at £240 per annum. Where's the rest of the money going?

The electricity used obviously has a small global impact but the local impact of lighting on creatures is pretty well known.
Dumb **** local council nonsense. Waste of money and environmentally damaging.

It is hard to reconcile this latest scheme with that plan.
I am always suspicious when politicians say they are 'responding to calls from the general public'. They are not generally responsive to the wishes of the public, and this always looks like an excuse dreamt up to justify a course of action the politicians are keen on.
And of course, it means they can be untruthful without actually lying (2 people say they think something is a good idea, and it can be construed as 'calls from the public').

This project has cost enough to do a lot of repairs or improve facilities for locals.
The council needs to look at the way it spends our cash.

Not sure how a small lit up statue would impact 'wildlife' in the area either.
I'm going to fly in the face of the moaning and say 'go for it'. The cost is in the noise, and it would look great!

They like us need total darkness at night for them function properly. Something to do with melatonin levels in humans and in birds un natural light messes up their breeding cycles etc and probably shortens their lives. The info is out there if you want it.
