Happy ending for wedding couple left in the lurch

THERE will be a fairytale ending for one soon-to-be wed couple despite the venue for their reception cancelling their big day.

As reported in your Worcester News yesterday 15 couple have been left in the lurch after The Inn at Stonehall, near Worcester, cancelled their receptions.

Following our front page story events co-ordinator Ellen Halpin-Barnett, of Bar Wholesale Drinks, has managed to sort out an alternative venue for couple Natalie Lewis and Alexander Peel – The Berkeley Arms in Spetchley.

Mrs Halpin-Barnett called your Worcester News offering to help any of the 15 couples who received an e-mail on Saturday telling them their wedding at The Inn at Stonehall had been cancelled.

“After I read the story I knew I had to help the brides out by hook or by crook,” she said.

“I just imagined if it was my family member that had been left in the lurch and I would have hoped that someone would be able to help out.”

Mrs Halpin-Barnett has arranged an improved wedding package at The Berkeley Arms for the same price, less the deposit they have lost.

Manager Azolo Tawfik has even thrown in some free extras such as red carpet and decorations to make their day extra special.

The couple had been on a tight schedule as they were flying out in two weeks for a fortnight in Mexico to marry and returning for a reception in the UK on Saturday, March 30.

Miss Lewis said: “We’re over the moon and I can’t thank Ellen and Azolo enough. I honestly didn’t think we would find somewhere so quick and it is a lovely venue.”

As we reported the weddings were cancelled after Mr Roberts decided to ‘back away’ from The Inn at Stonehall, owned by Joanna Coull, because he didn’t have faith in its future financially.

Mr Roberts has promised to refund five of the brides whose deposits were paid to him by Friday. However, the other 10 couples who had paid the venue prior to Mr Roberts arriving, will not be getting their deposits back.

Some have threatened to take legal action to try and recoup the financial loss including bride-to-be Stephanie Mason and her partner Scott Harford.

They will be losing their £500 deposit following the cancellation of their reception on September 21, 2013.

The couple, both aged 26, are due to be married at Claines Church and having booked all their suppliers are desperately trying to find a new venue.

“We’re going to take legal action, we’re not going to just let this go,” Miss Mason said.

Couples who need help finding an alternative place to hold their wedding reception should call Mrs Halpin- Barnett on 07793 461879, 01905 745437 or emailing ellen@barwholesale.co.uk.

The University of Worcester has also offered to help out those who had their pending weddings cancelled by offering the chance to hold their service, reception, or both, at the city campus.

Discounts are available for couples who lost their deposits.
