Anger as snarl-ups continue

SUCH A PAIN: Worcester... there are always roadworks. SUCH A PAIN: Worcester... there are always roadworks.

ANOTHER person has hit out over roadworks affecting one of Worcester’s busiest commuter routes.

Ombersley Road is currently partially closed while Severn Trent Water makes repairs to sewers in nearby Sunnyside Road and Barbourne Road. As your Worcester News revealed on Friday, the county council is also now doing patch work to the road too. It will continue until this Thursday.

One angry resident said she was upset because of the inconvenience it was causing. “It’s appalling – the council seem to be a law unto themselves,” she said.

“We’ve had no warning at all that this was going to happen. I would like to know who took the decision to dig up the road while there is already a lot of disruption for local residents from the roadworks currently underway.

“I am not disputing that work needs to be done but as usual the county council have done it in a way to cause the most inconvenience.”

The caller said the cones placed along the route by Severn Trent Water were also causing problems by blocking off parking spaces.

The cones run from Park Avenue to the Co-op, and are on both sides.

The county council has insisted the work is being done at the same time to minmise disruption to residents.

A letter has gone out asking people not to park on the road between 7.30am and 4pm. Jon Fraser, the county council’s highways manager said: “This work has been timed to coincide with the sewage replacement works being undertaken by Severn Trent.”

The lack of notification and poor management of roadworks by the council does not surprise me. They seem devoid of common sense and ability to ensure that not only are people warned beforehand with plenty of notice, but they arrange works in a manner which deliberately causes maximum disruption. Take in to account other projects they deliver and it's as if the council are trying to make Worcester a no go area for the private motorist. We really do have lunatics in charge of the asylum and it's so clear to so many people that the highways department is staffed my incompetent imbeciles.

To answer the resident's question as to who the person was who made the decision to dig up the road, Mr Peter Blake is the person in charge of the highways department called Integrated Transport, but it's Mr Tom Comerford who essentially delivers services across the County including road works, so he's the person who is responsible for causing this disruption.

It seems quite logical to me that if one utility is working on a particular stretch of highway, another works at the same time. The "resident" would be not too impressed if ST finished their work one week and WCC started their work the next thus extending the disruption. It's inconvenient - but live with it and for the moment park elsewhere!

As for complainants comments, I too, am delayed by the work. However, for most of us, it is similar to a trip to the dentist. We know it will be painful at the time, but we need to live with it - and grin and bear it. We also know (although we don't wish to appreciate it, whilst sat in traffic,) it's for the best, in the long term. As 'imustbe.....' states, "It is better that all utility companies work to get the jobs done simultaneously, rather than one at a time, with subsequent further delays.

Some people are never happy.

There are loads of complaints about the state of the roads and then someone complains when the works are done to fix them.

There are also complaints when one utility comes along and digs up the road, just after another has completed works, but now when they are being done together they complain again.

I live down that end of town and get clogged up in these roadworks each day but I'm just happy they are getting on with it.

When would "the angry resident" want it done - 3am on a Sunday morning? I bet they would complain then.

Yeah yeah yeah...........it's a main road in to Worcester NOT a car park for angry residents.
I also live in the area and am just getting on with life.

No one likes delays and inconvenience, but I fail to see what the problem is.

Severn Trent have to fix a problem. To do this I assume they have to dig up the road.

If the road is already coned off, then surely the County Council should be congratulated in bringing forward essential maintenance which can be done at the same time and thereby meaning they don't have to get out the cones again later.

It also means that they can do a better job at repairing the road surface in a way that reduces the chances of more potholes being created which they will subsequently be blamed for and have to spend scale resources on fixing.

I know its easy to complain and have a 'dig' at the County, but in this case I simply can't see why people are complaining as the only option seems to be not to fix the drains and leave the road in a poor state of repair. I'm sure those that are complaining now would be the first to be complaining if nothing was to be done.

Is it really such a big problem if people can't park outside their house for a few days and are delayed a few minutes on their journeys?
