RUNNERS from across the region hit the streets of Droitwich Spa to take part in the town’s annual half marathon event.

The 13.1 mile run, organised by Droitwich Athletics Club, was held on Sunday, March 3 and boasted a full field of 350 competitors.

Runners started at Gaudet Luce Golf Club, Middle Lane, Hadzor, to begin a course that took them through picturesque lanes and villages around Droitwich.

All runners held a minutes silence before the start to pay tribute to Stuart Wild, from Black Pear Joggers, who passed away two days before the event but had been training in preparation for the race.

Race winner Chris McCarthy, from Kenilworth Runners, crossed the finishing line in a time of just over one hour and 12 minutes. He was followed closely by team mate Jim Sawle. The women’s race was won by Louise Gibson from Hinckley Running Club.

Droitwich Athletics Club was led home by Paul Little who finished in fourth place overall. Other notable performances came from Trevor McGill, Kirk Denton, Emily Morrall, Katrina Ballard and Charlotte Holmes.

Those impressive individual performances meant that the town club men’s team came first and the club’s women bagged second place overall.

Droitwich Athletics Club members meet every Tuesday and Thursday night in the car park at the rear of Droitwich Leisure Centre. New runners are always welcome.
