My life is at risk every time I cross danger road

A WIDOW says she and other people are “dicing with death” every time they cross a dual carriageway because there is no pedestrian crossing.

Barbara Link, aged 77, of Swinesherd, Worcester, says she takes her life in her hands every time she crosses the 70 mph dual carriageway, the A4440 Swinesherd Way, to catch a bus from County Hall to the city centre.

Mrs Link, who has written to Worcestershire County Council several times about the problem, said: “I have been on at them for some time, trying to get something done about it.

“There’s also a nursery down here. We’re all dicing with death. Sometimes the drivers crossing the roundabout don’t slow down at all.” Mrs Link, who has lived at the same cottage since she was 12 years old, before the dual carriageway existed, said she has had a few “near misses” and even resorts to wearing brightly coloured clothes so motorists will see her. Sometimes she dreads crossing the road so much she forks out the £8 fare for a taxi into the city centre even though she can travel on a bus for free. She says she would find it difficult to walk to the crossing at Whittington at the far end of the dual carriageway.

She said: “I would like to see a crossing with a red light, a proper crossing. Sometimes, I have to stop in my tracks in the road and put my hand up.” She was backed by Jane Jones, proprietor of the Little Lodge Nursery School. Mrs Jones said: “It has always been a concern of mine. Children cross with their parents to the nursery.” Mrs Jones said one grandparent who brought a child to the nursery was so concerned about the road she walked all the way down to the crossing at the Whittington end of the dual carriageway.

Children from the nursery, aged six months and over, do not go to the Countryside Centre near County Hall anymore. She said: “We can’t go up there because it’s far too dangerous.”

She would like to see a crossing or even a footbridge but she understands the highways department is short of money. She said: “If the road was safer there is a possibility more people could walk to the nursery. A crossing would make a huge difference.”

Jon Fraser, Worcestershire County Council’s Highways manager said: “We receive lots of requests for pedestrian crossings and each are judged based on their merits. While we do sympathise with Mrs Link, currently there are no plans for a new crossing.”

I have every sympathy for Mrs Link, yet the City Councillors on the Planning Committee approved plans to develop greenfield land the wrong side of this 70mph dual carriageway, despite HM Planning Inspector Clive Richardson reporting: "...the Nunnery Way site is ... not well related to public transport and, where accessed by foot and cycle from the City, extremely unsafe given the need to cross a dual carriageway road with a 70 mph speed limit."

Can never understand why a crossing was not put in when the dual carriageway was built. I am surprised there hasn't been a serious accident there.

yes I'm not surprised if she walks across a dual carriageway and sticks her hand up she feels her life is at risk, although I can't work out from the article where she is trying to cross.

Maybe the bloke from the green party can campaign to make this a 20mph as well?

This idiot of a Highways Manager Jon Fraser should do his job properly. Visit the site along with this pensioner and see if she has justification for her request. Walk with her just once across the road and just see if there is a danger for the lady. Just imagine Jon F that it is your own mother. Dont make decisions from your ivory tower Jon F get off your botty and have a site visit. Do your job.

I know exactly where she is trying to cross and she has no choice there is no proper footpath along this road and if the speed limit is 70 you would'nt have a path along side the M5 it would you? i helped get a crossing put in down the other end towards the blind college as when nunnery way was put in there was going to be nothing and there were more than 50 kids due to cross that road to get to school, also they changed the speed limit to 40 as the path that goes up to Whittington school was alongside a 70 mph limit till it was changed, FRASER Resign is my motto he is incompetant.

There are plans to build 255 more homes in the field across from where this lady wants to cross and that will make things worse than ever.

I would have thought that given the location and the speed of the traffic, a foodbridge would be a better idea than a crossing. But sadly, i guess that Barbara will have to invest in a pair of running shoes and a Hi-Viz vest for the time being! :-(

I live near Mrs Link in Swinesherd and never attempt to cross the dual carriageway until after 9.00am. Before that it’s lethal. Since the road was re-designated the A44 the volume of traffic has noticeably increased. I think Jon Fraser’s remarks are so patronising. He seems to be telling Mrs Link that a lot people want what they can’t have so “get over it”. County Hall’s only a five minute walk away so why doesn’t he come and try to cross it himself around 8.30 when people would quite like to get to the nursery.

The fact that some sort of crossing facility was not provided from the outset just shows the short-sightedness and lack of intelligence demonstrated by the highways department.

And Mr Fraser's comments are not unique, and are reflective of the attitude of staff in this department. Arrogant, ignorant, flippant and condescending, that's what they all are. The concerns and well-being of the public, they're paid to serve, are simply dismissed. And yet they continue to get away with it and it seems there is nothing we can do.

Although many of us aren't engineers, I suspect we could all do a much better job than the current incumbents, and in a more efficient and cost-effective manner too.

I think the WN should investigate the operations of this department and its staff and make their findings public knowledge.

This is yet another symptom of highway design that sees the car as priority.

There are ways of designing in better and safer crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists that could have been incorporated and at little if any additional cost when the road was first built.

My big worry is that the County council won't learn from past mistakes (Whittington!) and simply repeat them as they increase the capacity of the St Peter's and Ketch roundabouts and subsequently dual the southern by-pass from the M5 to the Severn Bridge to cope with the increased traffic pressures which the massive increase of housing planned for Norton will generate.

My only hope is that the County will start to listen to the Government in starting to put the pedestrian and cyclist first when planning new highway infrastructure.

And, before the 'petrol heads' label this as anti-car they might like to consider that if more people find it easier and safer to walk and cycle rather than get in their cars, then the less traffic congestion there is to hold up those who do need to use their cars.

Saucerer , I think that all government employees are covered by the 'official secrets act ' it seems to mean that they are never held personally responsible for their actions unless there is such uproar
,such as the s/staffs hospital, that they never have to account for their actions . Full marks to WN for publicising this . It is a genuine public interest issue and I believe that those that make decisions that affect others should be accountable .
