FUNDING has been secured to make major improvements to Droitwich Spa’s town centre and transport links.

Worcestershire County Council will now start work on the Droitwich section of its county-wide Local Transport Plan (LTP3) following the news.

The scheme includes plans to revamp Droitwich Railway Station in Union Lane, the town centre, underpasses and traffic and parking options.

The county council wants to make the improvements from 2014 as part of the scheme. It will also be asking residents to give their views on the areas most in need of a revamp.

Members of important town groups, including Droitwich Spa Civic Society and For Droitwich Spa, met with highways officers to find out more about the plans on Tuesday, February 26. The meeting marked the launch of the Droitwich section of the project.

County councillor Pam Davey, who chaired the meeting, said: “This was a very useful event. It marked the start of the process to provide a much-needed stimulus to the vitality of the town.

“Involving local people at the very start of a project is the only way that their views can be properly taken into account.

“Overall, this funding is great news for Droitwich Spa. Even though the plans could be implemented in 2014, we think it is an important time to start gathering facts from the people of the town on what they want.

“These improvements are something that people can look forward to. It is about time Droitwich had such a great boost.”

The plan for improving the town is expected to be ready for public consultation later this year.
