Students to be visited by MEP
11:10am Friday 15th March 2013 in News
PUPILS at Droitwich Spa High School will be visited a sitting member of the European Parliament.
A-level politics students at the Briar Mill school are set to get first hand knowledge from MEP Nikki Sinclaire on March 22.
She will spend an hour with the sixth form students discussing and sharing her knowledge of local, national and international politics. She will then spend some time with student Julia Sammons who is undertaking personal research into the role of women in politics.
Ms Sinclaire was elected to the European Parliament in 2009 as a member of UKIP but sat as an Independent in 2010 following a split with the Europe of Freedom and Democracy group of which UKIP is part. In August 2012, Ms Sinclaire co-founded the We Demand a Referendum party, alongside former Apprentice star Katie Hopkins.
She is well placed to discuss her first hand experience of high level international politics as well as issues of a more local nature.
Mr Mark Drew, head of politics at the school, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for students of politics to get beyond simply reading about the subject or having me talk to them from an academic perspective. This will give them a real hands on flavour of what the day to day life of a politician is and also give them a genuine feel for how international politics works.”
Ms Sinclaire added: "I'm delighted to be able to visit the students at Droitwich Spa High School and Sixth Form. It is fantastic to meet students with such a keen interest in politics, and I can only encourage them to get further involved with a subject they clearly enjoy."
