A WOMAN will be counting the pennies as she attempts to feed herself for £1 a day to raise awareness of poverty.

Leanne Haworth, of St John’s, Worcester, is preparing to take part in the five-day Live Below the Line challenge in aid of UNICEF.

The final day also falls on her 26th birthday, which has made the general assistant at Sainsburys even more determined to reach her £200 fund-raising target which her employers have promised to double.

Miss Hawarth said: “I've been lucky enough to celebrate 25 birthdays so far, so this year I’ll be donating a little extra to UNICEF instead of spending money on a birthday cake.

“Taking part in Live Below the Line will help remind me that extreme poverty is not an abstract or academic problem, but one that affects real people in very real ways.”

Live Below the Line is an initiative of the Global Poverty Project, an education and campaigning organisation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of people taking action.

And Miss Hawarth said limiting herself to a spend of just 33p per meal would be difficult.

She said: “I think it will be incredibly difficult and I expect to be very hungry for most of the challenge.

“At the end of the five days I’ll be able to go back to having enough to eat though and many don’t have that luxury.”

The charity raises funds and awareness to support work to protect children’s rights worldwide in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – £5 can help UNICEF feed a malnourished child for a week.
