PARISH councillors have backed proposals to introduce a 20mph limit on a busy housing estate.

The speed limit would only be applied to residential areas within Warndon Villages in Worcester but would not affect the main roads running through the parish which are all subject to a 30mph limit. Worcestershire county councillor Andy Roberts, who represents Warndon South, told Warndon Parish Council he had been contacted by several people to support the introduction of a 20mph speed restriction.

Coun Roberts said the areas being considered include the Lyppards, Berkeleys and Meadows as well as those off Newtown Road and Middle Hollow Drive. He said many of the Villages only have one point of access which is where the 20mph limit would start, although he admitted it would not be enforced. Newtown Road, Woodgreen Drive, Dugdale Drive, Mill Wood Drive, Plantation Drive and Hastings Drive are not under consideration in the plans.

Coun Roberts said the highways department has been asked to consider the matter, but they had pointed out that this was part of the recent countywide review of speed limits. But he said: “I’m really keen on it. These things are being introduced all over the country.

“Our Villages lend themselves very much to a 20mph limit. They say it’s not enforceable but most people are pretty responsible, I think. If you say it’s 20mph, I think people will abide by it. “It’s one I hope the parish council has a chance to put on the agenda at some time.”

The parish council backed the plans and agreed to discuss the item at a future meeting. Coun Marc Bayliss said: “I think it would be a good idea.” Coun Roberts has previously been vocal in his wish to lower the speed limit in the area. As we reported in your Worcester News in 2010, both the parish council and Coun Roberts opposed plans to raise the speed limit on Woodgreen Drive to 40mph.
