THE Walled Garden, a peaceful oasis in the heart of Worcester, will be open to the public on Saturday afternoon as part of the first ever National Gardens Festival Weekend. The half-acre, 19th-century kitchen garden was bought 15 years ago by Julia and William Scott.
Then, it was totally overgrown with a combination of brambles, nettles, ground elder and bindweed, but has now been transformed into a tapestry of culinary and medicinal herbs, vegetables, flowers and fruit grown organically in herb and flower beds and a potager.
“While preserving its history, we hope the garden continues to change and flourish,” said Mr Scott.
The garden lies in Rose Terrace, off Fort Royal Hill, and will be open from 1am until 5pm as part of a National Gardens Scheme project to raise £500,000 for nursing and caring charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Carers Trust.
More than a dozen gardens across Worcestershire will be open at some time during the weekend and a full list is available at ngs.org.uk.
