SHE might not be your usual sort of rubbish collector but Daisy the dog certainly has a nose for litter.

The four-year-old cockapoo has taken it upon herself to tidy up the unsightly rubbish on her daily walks along Worcester’s canal paths with owner Judy Owens.

And the city’s newest unofficial beer can collector has won a vote of thanks from the Canal and River Trust for her efforts.

Mrs Owens, aged 65, who owns plus-sized clothing boutique You in Friar Street, Worcester, said Daisy’s new skill had developed in the last six months.

“Because she’s got some spaniel in her she’s got this desire to carry,” said the Spring Lane resident.

“She’s started clearing up the canal path and every time we go out she picks something like a can or a bottle and she won’t let it go until we go home or get to the shop.

“She doesn’t bury them, she puts them all into a bush and when she goes out every morning she checks they’re all still there.

“It’s very funny, first thing in the morning when I walk to work and she’s got a beer can in her mouth. I always pick stuff up from the canal path and maybe she’s just caught on to what I do.”

Since Daisy started her rubbish collection, she has become a household name.

“She’s my little meet-and-greet in the shop,” said Mrs Owens. “She’s started taking the empty cans to greet my customers at the door. “I think it’s amazing. I think it must have cleared the canal path quite a lot.”

Joe Coggins, communications officers for the Canal and River Trust, which maintains the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, welcomed the help.

“We rely on people to take the initiative and help out like this,” he said. “To take such an innovative approach is fantastic. Every little bit helps, it all adds up. Thanks go to Mrs Owens and Daisy.”
