HUNDREDS of schoolchildren will be given vital advice on how to stay safe.

About 800 Year 6 pupils from across south Worcestershire will be attending Worcester’s Sixways Stadium between July 1 and 5 for the Crucial Crew event.

Youngsters will work their way around a series of workshops focussing on internet safety, fire, road, riverside, and railway dangers, first aid, safe travel, healthy relationships and anti-social behaviour.

It is the first event of its kind to be held in south Worcestershire, while a similar event has run in the Wyre Forest for a number of years.

Youth inclusion officer, PC Neil Sharpe, said: “The event is aimed at children who are about to leave primary school to go up to secondary school.

“This is an important step for them, and many parents start to prepare them for the transition by giving them more independence.

“With the summer holidays also starting soon, it is the ideal time to teach them how they can keep themselves safe, and we hope the lessons they learn will stay with them for a lifetime.”

Ann Nicholls, ASB youth detached team manager at Worcester City Council, said: “Young people are often unaware of the impact their behaviour has on others.

“We will be acting out a play which brings home the dangers which risky behaviour can present, not only to others but to the perpetrators too.

“We want them to think about the impact anti-social behaviour could have on their health, careers and future.”
