Worcester car wash told to take down 'abysmal' screen

Worcester News: SPLASH BACK: The screen at Diamond Car Wash that must be taken down after planners refused to grant permission for it. 2513342102 SPLASH BACK: The screen at Diamond Car Wash that must be taken down after planners refused to grant permission for it. 2513342102

CAR wash owners in Worcester are having to take down a £2,000 fence after it was branded “abysmal” by politicians.

The Diamond Car Wash in Bromwich Road, St John’s, has been ordered to replace a semi-transparent fence by the city council’s planning committee.

Councillor Derek Prodger said: “It’s the most abysmal-looking screen I’ve ever seen.

After complaints from neighbours about water spray and noise, the owners erected the three metre-high boarding last Christmas without planning permission.

But a retrospective planning application has been rejected, meaning the business must spend thousands to erect a new one.

A report before the planning committee said it should be approved, despite the city’s conservation officer calling it “ugly” and “unsightly”.

The committee decided to unanimously refuse it, meaning the owners must take it down or appeal to the Planning Inspectorate.

Yeah agree. They have tried to appease neighbours at considerable expense and then the planning committee throw this curveball. Way to go to support Worcester businesses!

The words Prodger and abysmal go so well together, one could also add hypocritical.

Prodger was strangely quiet on the subject of that huge yellow monstrosity further along Bromwich Road and reluctant to assist the people affected.
I wonder why?

At least the screen hides the 'abysmal' extension on the neighbouring property.

I drive past this business most days and this screen really hasn't jumped out at me as being 'abysmal'. Although I find the attitude of the residents who are objecting abysmal! Is it the fact that planning permission wasn't applied for that is the problem or the screen itself I wonder? I recall some residents objecting to this business when it opened complaining about the cars queuing all the time, heaven forbid someone might be making a go of it instead of leaving the lot empty since it was a hire car place (which no one had a problem with). I would prefer to see some of the local residents who objected to this screen coming forward and voicing their concerns openly instead of Councillor Prodger doing it for them. I appreciate he's a councillor but if they are that upset about it then be brave, speak out.

Never mind enterprise Derek, remember when you had businesses of you own, were they "abyssmal"?

I can understand that the person whose window is behind the screen won't enjoy looking at the screen - but as screens go - I have seen worse! I do feel for that person though - probably no longer able to dry their pants on the line...

I am in favour of these car washes... in the right place... as they suit a purpose - but they need to be in the right location. The one at the bottom of Rainbow Hill, and the one by St Martin's Gate both use derelict areas where locals aren't affected, and are fab.

Lets face it - if you couldn't dry your clothes in your garden... and if your windows were always water marked... and you couldn't sit in the sun in your own garden, you would be annoyed as well.

When this carwash fist appeared there were nimby objections , but also some reasonable ones particularly about queing cars, since the location is very close to a bend in the road, and if, as I have been travelling out of the City you could be unexpectedly met by queing cars or if having to suddenly overtake the queing cars then the cars coming into the city. Also when the cold weather was with us it was a regular thing to find that where cars had left the site after being cleaned, any water dripped was adding to the already difficult road conditions.
So we can all go on about nimbyism or curtailing a business, but SAFETY COMES FIRST.
