A FAMILY of climbing novices will be scaling dizzying heights to support causes close to their hearts.

Led by Kevin Morgan, the group of intrepid trekkers will be attempting to conquer the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in just 24 hours.

They will start with Ben Nevis tomorrow before tackling Scafell Pike in the Lake District and finishing with Snowdon, in North Wales, on Sunday afternoon.

As the challenge includes travelling between the peaks, the Worcester family has enlisted partners and friends to drive them to each point.

Money raised will be shared between the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Cancer Research UK.

Mr Morgan lost his wife Lin to cancer last year, while his niece Saira Powell’s three-year-old son Rhys was born with Fibular Hemimelia – a condition where a child is born with all or part of the fibula missing and needs ongoing treatment.

Mrs Powell, from Rainbow Hill, said: “None of us have ever done anything like this before and so we are stepping into the unknown. The training on the Malvern Hills will stand us in good stead but we know the challenge will be far tougher.”

And she said the family would be drawing on their own experiences to complete the challenge. “The thing that will drive us on is the two charities we are supporting, so we will keep that in our minds and hope it’s enough to get us to the bottom of Snowdon in one piece, and within 24 hours,” Mrs Powell added.
