MUSIC and passion are in fashion in Worcester as talented youngsters offer invitations to a big night at the Copacabana.

It’s a fast-moving and glamorous musical by the prolific and popular Barry Manilow, set mainly in the post-war New York nightclub of the title. It brings out the strength in depth of the Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section, known as WODYS, which has discovered some exceptional principals here.

Dan Hooper leads with a nicely judged blend of naivete and charm as would-be 1980s singer-songwriter Stephen, who morphs into would-be singer-songwriter Tony in the Copacabana club in New York, 1947.

Fresh off the train steps Molly Holder as Lola la Mar, singing beautifully and seamlessly turning from starry-eyed farm hand to showgirl. She also looks like Stephen's wife, Samantha, as the plot is an extended dream sequence brought about by him working on what will become his best-known song.

Lola joins crusty but kind club owner Sam Silver and big-hearted cigarette girl Gladys, a very funny double act by Greg Bytheway and Cerys Jones, whose Copa Girl is a highlight. Thanks to lovestruck Tony, Lola gets her big chance but she’s kidnapped by Italian gangster Rico, a menacing Matthew Emeny, who delivers a powerfully operatic Bolera D’Amore, and taken to his Tropicana club in Havana.

He is looking to replace fading star Conchita, played by Olivia Jones, another fine singer, but hasn’t reckoned on some unlikely heroes.

An excellent band backs a cast of 55 children of all ages, well choreographed in some big dance scenes. They all seem like they’re having a great time and their enthusiasm is infectious so if you’re looking for a classy night out, put on your tuxedo and head for Copacabana.

It runs until Saturday at the Swan Theatre and to book tickets, visit worcesterlive.co.uk.
