THE future of an “eyesore” plastic screen at a Worcester car wash remains uncertain a week after councillors ordered it to be torn down.

The three-metre plastic fence at the Diamond Car Wash, on Bromwich Road, St John’s, was put up last December following complaints from residents about noise and spray from the business.

Although the screen – officially designated an ‘acoustic structure’ – was intended to shield residents from noise from the business, neighbours had said it was not doing its job and asked for it to be removed.

It was set up without planning permission and last week it was refused retrospective consent by Worcester City Council’s planning committee, meaning the business must take the screen down as soon as possible. However, manager Jali Karin did not know about the decision until a reporter from your Worcester News visited the business on Tuesday afternoon.

He said he would consider what action to take once he had received an official notification from the council.

“We’re not going to remove it until we have something from them,” he said.

“It was put there because of concerns from neighbours so something has got to be done about that.

“We’re not going to shut the business just because we have to take the screen away.”

A spokesman from the council said the authority would be serving an enforcement notice on the business requiring them to remove the screen, although they anticipated it may be removed voluntarily.

None of the people living nearby wanted to comment.
