WALKERS have received a celebrity call to arms to register for a charity walk in Worcester next month.

Registration is open for the Alzheimer Society’s Memory Walk at the Worcester Woods Countryside Centre, Spetchley Road, on Sunday, September 8.

And among those backing the event is Hollywood star actress Carey Mulligan.

The 28-year-old urged people to get their walking boots on in a bid to support more than 1,000 people in the county suffering from dementia.

“The Alzheimer’s Society is a cause very close to my heart as my nan has dementia so I grew up experiencing the effects the condition has on her,” said Miss Mulligan, who is famed for her role in The Great Gatsby, which was released this year.

“That’s why I am supporting Memory Walk. It gives us the opportunity to really make a difference to those living with dementia and their carers.

“Memory Walk is a great opportunity for the whole family to spend a day out together while also raising money for such an important cause. “I would encourage everyone to sign up today.”

The event, which will be the supported by Bupa Care Homes for the third time, is the Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fund-raiser.

Starting at 11am, a variety of entertainment and refreshments will be available, making it a day to remember.

Emily Weighill, Alzheimer’s Society community fund-raiser for the West Midlands, said: “From a four-year-old to his 80-year-old gran and her dog, Memory Walk sees whole families coming together to fight dementia.

“And an array of entertainment will be available, making it a lovely day out for everyone who takes part.

“There are 1,196 people with dementia in Worcester. Thanks to the support of Bupa Care Homes, Memory Walk is able to support more people living with dementia and their carers through the vital funds that are raised.”

Mum-of-three Toni Driver, of Worcester, took part in last year’s Memory Walk.

She said: “We had a fabulous day last year, making it a family day out with a picnic to follow. We were walking for my mother who had dementia.

“I got myself sponsored by friends and neighbours and raised £200 to help support the work of Alzheimer’s Society in Worcester.”

The walk is open to people of all ages. For more information, or to register, visit memorywalk. org.uk/worcester.
