ARCHITECTS have found a mediaeval bell frame inside the picturesque tower of a village church in desperate need of restoration.

Architects from Nick Joyce Architects made the discovery while investigating historical features and the importance of the tower construction of St Peter’s Church, Pirton, near Worcester.

The striking black and white timber-framed bell tower of the church is deteriorating and in need of significant repair and restoration.

Despite a Heritage Lottery Fund grant towards the repair and investigations, parishoners still have to fund £40,000 to ensure the structure is maintained for future generations.

Dendorchronolgy tests – tree ring dating – are being carried out and the results are expected to be returned in a couple of weeks.

Derek Skeys, chairman of the Pirton Church Tower Appeal, said that while the stunning bell tower is thought to date back to the 14th or early 15th century, they were unaware of the existence of the bell frame which was designed for two bells.

An iconic structure, the church is thought to have been the inspiration for Hornby when they produced a Skaledale model called Holy Trinity Church.

He said: “It is important that this work is carried out in order to stem the deterioration of the fabric which has become evident over recent years.

“If these repairs are not completed, the tower as an example of traditional timber-framed building may be lost.”

Parishioners have set up the Save Pirton Church Tower page on Facebook and have already organised karaoke and Strictly Come Dancing evenings as well as a barn dance and quiz night to raise funds.

The next event will be a Creation-themed flower festival which will take place during this weekend.

Visitors to the church will be greeted by a floral Adam and Eve and will be able to see arrangements of Noah’s Ark and animals between 10am and 5pm.

There will also be refreshments, local plants for sale and a raffle.

Entry is £3 per person with all proceeds go towards the appeal. For more information log on to facebook.com/Pirton Church.
