Hundreds of pigs killed in blaze at Besford farm
HUNDREDS of pigs were killed when a fire broke out at a farm near Pershore on Tuesday night.
The blaze took hold of a wooden barn at Lincolns Farm, Severn Stoke Road, Besford, where the pigs were housed at 9.30pm.
Sixty per cent of the building, which was 50x20 square metres in size and housed about 1,000 pigs, was destroyed. The exact number of animals which perished is not yet known but is thought to be about 600.
Four fire crews were sent to the scene to tackle the fire and on arrival, three more engines were requested. Crews helped the farmer move the rest of the livestock to safety.
Firefighters used three main jets and two hose reel jets to successfully get the fire under control just after midnight.
A tweet to fire service South Worcestershire district commander Grant Wills from Emma Hunt about midnight read: ‘massive thank you to all the crew for helping to save our farm’.
Mr Wills replied: ‘thank you Emma, we will be visiting throughout today to check on things and help where we can at what must be a really hard time’.
An investigation into how the fire began has started.
