Do children learn old-fashioned nursery rhymes any more?

My daughters, aged five and seven, were certainly unfamiliar with most of the verses in this beautifully illustrated and formatted compendium, covering all the most famous examples of the genre. But it's a measure of the timelessness of these centuries-old snatches of childhood doggerel that they were soon delightedly reciting them aloud.

Children may have a wealth of wonderful entertainment available to them these days, but it's important to preserve the link with playtimes past. Nicola Bayley's book goes some way to ensuring that children will be enjoying these rhymes for years to come, even if the original meaning of many of them is already lost in the mists of time.
