End of era at Legion women’s section
10:40pm Monday 30th September 2013 in News
DROITWICH Royal British Legion is facing the end of an era due to the closure of its women’s section.
The organisation can no longer run a women’s section in the town because of the lack of younger members. Nearly 60 years of history were due to be brought to an end yesterday at the town’s war memorial in Victoria Square to lay a wreath and lower the section’s standard for the final time.
The flag was later taken to St Andrew’s Church and handed over for safe keeping.
The women’s section was started in August 1955 and boasted many members and wives of former servicemen.
Chairman Hazel Gandy said: “The women’s section was popular in the 1950s and was made up of wives and girlfriends of people who fought in the Second World War. However, those young women have got older and we’ve lost so many over the years too.”
A final annual meeting will be held on Saturday before documents and accounts are handed over for posterity.
