A CONCERNED mum is leading a campaign to bring a brand new park to Upton-upon-Severn.

Sussanah Bramley believes the town’s existing park, off New Street, is the most rundown she has ever seen and “like something you would have seen in the inner-city 15 years ago”.

She feels a new park would be a benefit, not just for the families, but also for the town as a whole – helping to boost trade for shops and restaurants and giving people yet another reason to visit. “I think if we had a nicer park then surely more people would come to our town,” she said. “The whole Upton experience would be enhanced.

“My vision is of an Upton park that is something we can be really proud of, alongside all the floral displays and music festivals.”

She would like to see a brand new park with up-to-date equipment, separate areas for young people and even dedicated walks for people to enjoy.

“The skate park is there and has been invested in but the rest of it I don’t think there is much point in trying to rejuvenate what is there,” she said. “There is a lot of funding out there available for projects like this. It would take work to unlock but there is potential there.

“It is not going to happen overnight and we will need a lot of people on board. I think it is really important that we speak to members of the public to see what they want.”

The mother-of-two, who lives just over the river in Ryall, received an encouraging response when she outlined her hopes for the park to members of Upton Town Council. They were so impressed with Mrs Bramley’s vision for the park that she has been invited to join the council’s new recreation working group.

Mayor Peter Webb said she could make a very valuable contribution. “You have made a very good case and we are all terribly aware of the fact that the children’s play area is frankly not fit for purpose,” he said. “But equally we have a precept that we have to live within and the amount of money coming in is finite.” Councillor Pat Martin said improving the park was a project the council had looked at a few years ago but had to put on hold because of work to create new flood defences in the area. “We are fully aware how disgusting it is and we hope that we will be able to do something,” she said.
