AT the back of Worcester’s historic Guildhall, three retired policemen proudly show off their brand new three-wheeled Morgan car.

And coincidentally, that was also the setting for a photograph taken in 1930, featuring the very first police car in the city.

Now, three retired police officers have recreated the image, posing next to a new three-wheeler, made by Malvern-based Morgan Motor Company, as was the city’s first squad car.

Recreating the image was the brainchild of retired West Mercia Police Chief Superintendant Colin Terry, who teamed up with colleagues Steve Rodger, a retired sergeant, and Norman Sheffield, a former inspector.

He told your Worcester News that Morgan had begun making the 500kg car, which is powered by a two-litre S&S motorcycle engine, about two years ago.

“We thought it would be interesting to try to recreate the picture,” he said.

“It’s all modern technology but the design’s the same.”

Today, Mr Terry runs 3 Wheel Drive, an organisation which provides free familiarisation courses to new owners of the vehicles.

“We started just training people in their new cars but it’s become really popular,” he said.

“So many people have been ringing us and saying ‘can we have a go?’.

“We’ve had people from all over the world – we had some people from Canada who flew into Heathrow, took the train up and then went back to Canada the same evening.”
