Food bank cashes in on our trolley dash goodies
THE main picture on this page shows the moment staff from Worcester Food Bank received their donation from the new 99p Store – thanks to a 99-second trolley dash by a Worcester News reporter.
Reporter Chris Plant completed the dash on Saturday and collected £190 of food and toiletries to be donated to the food bank.
In a generous act, the 99p Store decided to double the donation and offered an extra £190 of food vouchers, too.
Colin Whitehead, manager of Worcester Food Bank, said: “Donations like this are really important as we rely entirely on donations and charitable acts such as this.
“At this stage, in our first year we helped 1,000 families. This year we have helped 4,000 so it’s clear demand for us certainly rising. It’s acts like this, as well as the volunteers, that keep us going. We are extremely grateful to the 99p Store for this donation.”
Nazakat Fiaz, manager of the store, next to Asda in St Martin’s Quarter, said: “We are more than happy to provide the food bank with this donation as the work they do is very important. We will always try to support our local community.”
The shop opened on Saturday and has created 30 jobs.
