A GOURMET restaurant has won approval to open in Worcester’s CrownGate shopping centre – the latest in a line of trendy eateries.

Bill’s Restaurant, which serves classic British dishes ranging from steaks to duck pie and fish, has won backing to open in the old Entertainer toy shop.

The company, which has restaurants in Bath, Brighton, Oxford, London, Cambridge and Bristol, will create about 25 jobs.

Outdoor seating will be provided to add to CrownGate’s al fresco culture where customers will be able to sit under a glass canopy. During a debate by Worcester City Council’s planning committee, the ongoing changes to the shopping centre were praised.

Alan Coleman, from the planning department, said: “This area of the city has become a highly popular place of destination in recent times.

“With the likes of Carluccio’s and Huntingdon Hall nearby, if you would have another restaurant of this quality anywhere this would be the place for it.

“This is an absolutely superb location.” The committee backed the decision unanimously, despite some protestors saying the outdoor seating at restaurants in CrownGate could prove hazardous for pedestrians.

Councillor Alan Amos said: “I’m still bothered that these cafes and restaurants displace pedestrians in bad weather. The dining establishments take over the pavements and people have to walk around tables and chairs. It’s unfair on shoppers.”

Coun Roger Berry said: “I agree. It’s about time someone stood up for pedestrians in the city.”

Bill’s menu provides meals at all times of the day, from breakfast to dinner, including afternoon tea.

The approval comes just over a month after the opening of Coffee Dough, known as CODO, which occupies a stunning glass pavilion in the CrownGate complex.

The Entertainer toy shop is now in the Shambles.
