A HOMELESS charity facing a critical funding crisis is being helped by kind-hearted members of a prestigious community choir.

The Maggs Day Centre, which has helped thousands of homeless people in Worcester for almost 30 years, fears that it will have to cut the number of hours it can offer help to needy people due to proposed funding cuts and falls in donations.

The charity, based in Deansway, Worcester, has seen its funds drop as people and organisations have to tighten their belts.

Last week, the charity appealed for a ‘Christmas miracle’ in your Worcester News, for more support to help keep it afloat.

And members of the 80-strong Powick Community Choir have responded with a generous Christmas present – a donation of £1,000.

The money is from takings at three sell-out concerts it performed at the historic Stanbrook Abbey, in Callow End, near Worcester, topped up from the choir’s own funds.

The choir’s musical director Tom Wells, who is also a Worcestershire county and Malvern Hills District councillor, said he had been very saddened to hear that Maggs was facing a struggle.

“It seemed very appropriate to support the centre at this time of year more than any other,” he said. “Christmas is very focused on families and if you have not got anyone around you it can be an extremely miserable time of year.”

He said the concerts had not only been a fund-raising success, but also a musical triumph. “The music was exhilarating,” he said. “We entertained 480 guests across three very well-received concerts and they were very generous in supporting the cause.”

Powick Community Choir was established in 2010 and is due to start up rehearsals again in Powick Parish Hall at 4.15pm on Sunday, January 5.

New members are always welcome and anyone wishing to find out more information should contact Tom Wells on 01905 831752.
