THE president of the West Worcestershire Conservative Association has been made an MBE in the New Year Honours.

Prue Winton, of St Michael's, Tenbury, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in today's honours.

Mrs Winton was notified by letter that she will receive the MBE for voluntary political service, which she has been actively involved in since 1989.

She said: “My first reaction was that I was staggered. One doesn’t do these things expecting a reward at all. I was very, very surprised.

"This came out of the blue.”

Mrs Winton has done work nationally, regionally and locally for the Conservative Party and was one of those invited to attend the funeral of the late Conservative Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher at Westminster Abbey earlier this year.

She has also been area chairman and regional chairman of West Midlands Conservatives and chairman of the governors of both Tenbury primary and high schools.

She said her main role had been as a facilitator, helping act as a mentor to Conservative candidates at all levels and acting as a point of contact between MPs, councillors and constituents, offering advice and support and “trouble-shooting” and organising fund-raising.

For two years she also ran the National Excellence Awards which recognised the achievements of those who had made an exceptional contribution to the Conservative Party and still does work for Conservative headquarters.

She had been supported throughout her endeavours by her husband, Roy, the treasurer at the Tenbury Royal British Legion who is thrilled about her achievement.

She plans to continue working for the Conservative Association, including in the build-up to coming elections.
