A FAST food outlet is up for a top national award.

The Bull Ring Chippy, in St John’s, Worcester, has been nominated for the Best Kebab Shop in the UK Outside London award with four other finalists.

Jon Randell, owner of the chip shop – pictured with one of his special kebabs – said: “I took over nearly two years ago but it was not in a great shape. Thankfully, we have all managed to turn it around.

“It was great when we found out we had been nominated. The staff deserve special mention.

"We think it’s brilliant Worcester can boast one of the best chippies in the country.”

The chippy was nominated by shoppers working on behalf of the British Kebab Awards.

The winner will be announced on Tuesday, January 14, in London.

What a very judgemental and prejudiced sweeping statement. I am quite shocked at that attitude. Whether you are making this statement from living in the area and basing it on your experiences, or basing it on hearsay, your opinion is a narrow minded and judgemental one. Do you know everyone that uses Ambleside chippy? Have you conducted a poll and analysed the data? Do you have webcams set up in people's homes to see what type of cookery books they have, if these cookery books are used, and where they source their ingredients from? I think not; that comment is down right snobbery. I think Ambleside chippy is the best in Worcester, and also know people who travel a distance to get the best sized and quality mini fish in town! Shame on you Guy66. A person's postcode does not determine other factors in their lives. Such as career, education level, favourite restaurant, tastes in music, entertainment, hobbies and ability to cook good food. I always cook food from fresh, and often it is more unusual fayre, but, at times, I want a chippy dinner, because I am giving myself/family members a break from spending time in the kitchen. Disgusted at such a bigoted mindset.

Right, so call me fickle and suggestable....I've been to Bull Ring Chippy to try one of these super kebabs (ever since I saw the artice I've had a flipping chicken kebab craving). Verdict? It was ace. The meat was very tender, great salad and dressed with a fab chili sauce. My other (less overweight) half had fish and chips and these were very good....crisp batter and they're using new potatoes still so the chips are crisp and not soggy/greasy. I know food quality at chippies can change from time to time but I really can't fault them tonight....top of their game I'd say and based on my (yes highly scientific!) sample I can see why the judges picked their food over the other chippies in the area. I reckon they're in with a great chance of winning for Worcester......

However, you cant make a "best chippy" competition without taking into consideration ALL the chip shops beforehand.

Agree completely! We should all be behind them...Get St Johns back on the map. :-)

I still don't get why there are so many negative comments? It goes to show how passionate people get about fast food. I wonder if they'd be a similar opinion if a health food shop was awarded the same thing? I can see people debating at how the Lentil and Soya Bean Bake is better from one side if the city compared to the next!

Get a life people! You're all arguing about deep fried potato slices, battered fish and (in this case) reformed off-cut spiced meat! Get yourself a sexy little tofu salad and live a little! (That is humour by the way)! 😁

The thing that does amuse me about all of this is that the Bull Ring has been visited by the awards people, along with all the other chippies in the area, and on the strength of that visit has been nominated out of thousands of chippies/kebab shops across the country. Now look, I know everyone has their favourite shop and all, but you have to give these guys credit where credit is due. Anyone who has actually been recently and had a bad experience should probably go again and have the king size jumbo chicken kebabfest I had last night. All I'm saying is that, for whatever reason, the other shops just weren't as good as the Bull Ring when the visits were made and so we should be proud that like it or not someone from Worcester has made a bit of a mark on the map. Get behind them (and their massive kebabs!). If they win then fair play I reckon.

I'm sure they had tofu salad and bean fest on the menu last night....or maybe it was the three pints I'd had? Best mung bean stew in the midlands I had from there....

What gets me is that St Johns is a struggling high street and so stuff like this can be so great for not only the chippy involved, but by all the businesses in the area. All you 'moaners' should realise that its hard enough to keep a business going in this economic climate, so to be nominated for an award is fantastic and should not only be celebrated by all, but also supported by all. I, for one, will be awaiting the news on Tuesday, along with my colleagues at WRH and whatever the outcome, will be celebrating with a huge kebab ;-) Yummy!

Not sure that it is great for all the surrounding businesses as majority of these are takeaways also! Unless it is as bad as people say and it drives custom to the other ones...........

I'm sorry but I have to point out that after slating Bullring Chippy by saying:
'any of the takeaways in city centre would beat his kebabs for quality hands down '
You then add that you are a vegetarian? Hmmmm....Can you possibly comment, then? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but you don't eat them, do you?
So who is pathetic and ignorant then, other than those who Comment negatively on something that they know nothing about?
Tut-tut.

Wow...

52 comments later and there is still a debate. Sad...

Despite the question mark on the headline of this story, I believe it to be a rhetorical question. In other words, it needs no answer. It's a statement; an opinion. The chippy hasn't even won the award yet so why is there so much discussion around the topic? And more to the point, what has vegetarian food, Chinese takeaways and price inflation got to do with this story?

Like I said previously; "get a life people"!

Why should they have to cook chips in separate oil to meat? That would probably cost the chippy more money and hence my fish and chips even more expensive, if vegetarians don't like this method then eat somewhere else!

They are "allowed" to cook in what ever decent quality oil or fat they choose to. catering for vegetarians is a choice not a law. Most vegetarians are not that worried anyway as the actual flesh of the fish is not cooked directly in the oil but is instead steamed within the batter coating. Everyone has a choice in these matters not a right.
