Three more outlets have signed to take space at Newport Retail Park, Spytty, including popular restaurant chain Nandos, which is also coming to the city centre next year.

The retail park branch of Nandos is expected to be open by the end of the summer.

The chain is taking 3,200 sq ft in a building next to the new Pizza Express at the entrance to the park off Spytty Road.

The two other new signings are outdoor clothing and equipment store Trespass, which is taking 1,851 sq ft next to Bank, and Caffé Nero, which will be mofing into half of the building currently occupied by Carphone Warehouse, which is staying in the other half.

These signings mean there are only two more units at the retail park left empty - both are close to the existing H+M, Gap and M&S stores.

On the outskirts of the park there is also a 40,000 sq ft site off Severn Stiles Avenue, near Matalan, which is yet to be built on, and the former Megabowl building which has been empty for a number of years but which recently was subject to a planning application to turn it into a retail site.

Also coming to the park in the near future is Harvester, which will be moving into a newly-built unit close to Cineworld.

David Jones, of Hutchings & Thomas Chartered Surveyors, Newport, said: “Newport Retail Park is fast becoming a destination hub providing a range of shops, restaurants and leisure outlets that the modern family demand.

“The range of restaurants which will now include Nandos and Caffé Nero and as previously announced the Harvester and Pizza Express, further add to the solid and impressive offering this part of the city can offer as an attraction to those who might otherwise look to Cardiff, Bristol or even Cwmbran for this retail package.

“The construction of the new and very important access roads to the north of the site, close to the new housing development on the former Llanwern site, will also make the retail park even more customer friendly and further boost the appeal of one of its magnet outlets the cinema which, latest figures show, last year attracted some 500,000 customers and is likely to add a further 100,000 to that number in 2014.

“A key turning point for the Newport Retail Park, was the decision by leading retailer Marks and Spencer to locate their store from the centre of the city to Spytty this acted as a catalyst for those other operators whop were perhaps wavering to take the plunge and full space at the what is now a very attractive, modern and well stocked centre. I believe we could also be hearing some positive news on the former Megabowl site very soon too.

“I’m encouraged that once Friars Walk is complete and the city’s football team continues to thrive that Newport will once more become a retail city able to compete with the very best.”
