DRIVERS faced long queues this morning after a city centre road was closed off to traffic.

National Grid is carrying out roadworks to fix a gas escape and the road along the A38 Sansome Walk to Pierpoint Street has been closed to traffic today.

Cars travelling from the north of the city through Ombersley Road and Droitwich Road toward the city centre were caught up in long tailbacks.

As diversions sent drivers away from Sansome Walk and down Castle Street, traffic continued to back up through the city including cars coming from the Bromwich Road.

Drivers took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

David Throup, Environment Agency manager for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, tweeted to say: "Traffic carnage in #worcester Thought allowing an hour to do 4 miles was ok - I was wrong!"

Another driver tweeted: "Been sat in rush hour traffic in Worcester for 40 mins now and moved about 2 miles #thatisbadtimes"

The roadworks were scheduled to finish today
