VITAL work has now been completed at a Droitwich Spa charity centre for people with major physical disabilities.

The Spectrum Days facility has been opened at the former Droitwich Youth House site in Old Coach Road.

The youth club that previously used the building had been a big part of the town for more than 40 years until it closed its doors in August last year after a review of services by Worcestershire County Council.

However, the building has now been taken on by Spectrum Days to provide care for people across the region. Volunteers are offering a range of support services from 7am to 7pm from Monday to Saturday for 50 weeks a year.

The first phase of work to refurbish the main room and instal bathroom facilities and hoisting equipment has recently been finished. It means the centre is now fully operational.

The extensive site is accessible and has specialist facilities, equipment and resources. There are also future plans to provide an advisory service and network for families. Work with Worcester Snoezelen and The MOVE Partnership supports an emphasis on independence.

Chairman of trustees for Spectrum Days, Maggie Allen, said: "This is a big thing for the whole region, especially in light of extensive closures of traditional day care services.

"Droitwich is an ideal base with a wonderful community feel and a central position in the county. Transport can be part of the service extending the reach to people in Worcestershire and south Birmingham.

"We aim to share our good fortune with the community and have plans to rent out space to families and community organisations when the building is not in use for its core activities.

"We also source services and offer employment and volunteering opportunities locally, bringing the community into the building to give a sense of value and sharing.

"Now that the last of the work has been completed it means we can offer all of the important services we wanted to. The transformation has been amazing."

A family event has been arranged for Thursday, January 30 from 1pm to 2.30pm to help showcase the site.
