AN MP has praised a Worcester business for helping support literacy goals.

Robin Walker visited the Free Book shop in the Lychgate Shopping Centre behind Cathedral Plaza and heard about how the shop rescues books that would otherwise be pulped from publishers and charity book shops.

Volunteers then sort them and put them on display.

Mr Walker said: "I was amazed to find this wonderful shop right in the heart of Worcester and I think more people should be aware of the vital work that they do.

"It is wonderful to know that any member of the public can come in here and get three free books a day.

"There are some real gems to be found but more importantly those who might find it a strain to buy books for their children or themselves can access this service and get high quality books to read.”

Mr Walker mentioned the work of the shop during a select committee meeting, which was part of an inquiry into Adult Literacy and Numeracy.

Mr Walker said: “As my select committee begins an inquiry into adult literacy and how we can improve it, it is so important to remember that reading is not just a core life skill but also something that helps to improve our understanding of the world, of other people’s points of view and our ability to empathise."

Mr Walker also praised the work of volunteers and the charity Healthy Planet, which supports the Worcester Shop.
