EIGHT cars and a van were set alight in the Warndon area of Worcester in a suspected arson attack last night.

Five vehicles were completely destroyed in the fires and another four were significantly damaged.

Firefirefighers were called to a car fire near Warndon Primary School in Edgeworth Close at about 11.45pm last night but quickly found other vehicles were also ablaze nearby.

Three crews from Worcester and one from Droitwich spent about an hour and half dealing with the fires, which were all in the area of Randwick Drive, Haresfield Close, Tetbury Drive and Martindale Close.

A police spokesman said: "These are worrying incidents and at the present time we cannot see any obvious reason why the vehicles have been targeted, therefore we suspect this is just an act of blatant vandalism. “We are thankful there have been no injuries.

"Additional patrols will be taking place over the next few days to provide reassurance to local people.

“Policing teams in South Worcestershire will be out and about talking to residents in Warndon in an attempt to gather information about these fires.”
