THE cloisters of Worcester Cathedral came alive with cheering and shouting as the annual pancake race got underway.

Members of Worcester Cathedral Choir came together to enjoy the annual event as part of the Cathedral's Shrove Tuesday celebrations.

The Cathedral's boy and girl choristers formed teams and flipped pancakes while also dealing with obstacles courses and dribbling footballs or carrying beanbags on their heads.

Also wielding frying pans were the Cathedral's lay clerks, organist, the Dean of Worcester, the Very Reverend Peter Atkinson and the Cathedral's director of music Dr Peter Nardone.

Pupils from nearby King's St Alban's school lined the cloisters to cheer the teams across the finish lines.

The final victory went to the Dean's team, Team Cantoris, which was largely made up of choristers who sit in the north of the Cathedral after a close finish.

They came over the line second but the team who were first were disqualified after losing their pancake.

The choristers were also sponsored to take part to raise money for Water Aid, an international charity that improves access to safe water.

Susan MacLeod, spokeswoman from Worcester Cathedral, said: "It was lovely.
