A GOLFING society is flying high after raising about £10,000 in the memory of a promising sportsman who died in a tragic accident.

The GLADRAGS (Gentlemen of Ledbury and District Rugby and Golf Society) collected the amount for the Jack Segust memorial air ambulance appeal and the Midlands Air Ambulance via their annual fund-raising event in July at Burghill Valley Golf Club.

Mr Segust, a Ledbury Rugby Club member, was aged 21 when the golf buggy he was in overturned at the Herefordshire Golf Club, Wormsley, in August 2012.

He was taken by air ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham but died the following day from his injuries. Andy Ward, of GLADRAGS and the landlord of the Talbot Hotel in Ledbury, was among the society's members to join Mr Segust's family for the cheque presentation at the Midlands Air Ambulance's Strensham airbase, near the M5, in Worcestershire, on Thursday, February 27.

Mr Ward: "His family set up a trust in his memory to help the air ambulance that tried to save his life but unfortunately couldn't. "

Of the amount raised and looking ahead to this year's event, Mr Ward added: "Every year it gets better. We are hoping we can raise as much many and keep doing some good while engaging other sporting people to support good causes."

Mr Segust was a student at Portsmouth University, where he had just completed his second year studying civil engineering.

The society, which was formed by members of Ledbury Rugby Club in 1992, is staging this year's golf day at Burghill Valley Golf Club on Friday, July 18 in aid of the Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS).

The service delivers pre-hospital immediate medical care for Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Funds will once agin be raised via entry fees, sponsorship and a charity auction.
