A WORCESTERSHIRE woman will be walking 10,000 steps a day for a week to raise cash for women who have to make gruelling journeys for water across the world.

Lisa MacCourt, of Goodwood Close, in Fernhill Heath, wants to encourage people to join her journey walking in solidarity with women in developing countries as part of CARE International UK's worldwide campaign, Walk in Her Shoes, starting on International Women's Day (Saturday, March 8).

She said: "Across the world, women bear the brunt of poverty, vulnerability and domestic drudgery. In countless countries it is still common for women and girls to have to spend their days doing backbreaking work like walking miles for water instead of attending school or paid work, trapping generations of girls in the cycle of poverty and preventing them from fulfilling their potential.

"By walking I will be raising funds for CARE's work - including providing clean water to poor communities - so women and girls can spend their days living, learning and earning instead of making gruelling journeys for water, simply to survive."
