Worcester school becomes Eco-Schools Ambassador

Nunnery Wood High School was given the accolade along with 11 other schools in Britain and will be an Ambassador for two years from April 2014 to March 2016.

Keep Britain Tidy, which runs the Eco-Schools programme, chooses exceptional schools to be Ambassadors which involves representing the programme and encouraging new schools to join.

Schools must have held the Eco-Schools Green Flag award for four consecutive years to be eligible to apply for the role.

Student Eco-Committee chairman Ollie Smith, age 15, from Nunnery Wood High School, said: "When I found out that we attained Eco-Schools Ambassador status my happiness shot through the roof.

"I just wanted to stand up and shout hurrah!

"I am guessing that many more students were as excited as I am.

"We are one of twelve schools in the country to achieve this status.”

Elena Lengthorn, the school's Eco-Schools coordinator said: "We are delighted to be recognised for our innovative project work and we’re looking forward to supporting more schools in Worcester and beyond."

Eco-Schools Ambassadors are expected to work above and beyond the expectations of the Green Flag award, going that extra mile to demonstrate that sustainability is core to the school's culture, that they show inspirational leadership and an initiative approach to working towards the Eco-Schools programme, as well as helping other schools to adopt the Eco-Schools framework.

Councillor Anthony Blagg, cabinet member for the environment, said: "Nunnery Wood High School is an inspiration to other schools and I know their eco-coordinator and eco-committee work tirelessly to promote sustainability amongst young people and the wider community.

"It is great to see Nunnery Wood High School getting the national recognition they deserve."

Eco-Schools is the largest sustainable education programme in the world with 17,000 English schools registered with the programme, and over 1,700 holding the international Eco-Schools Green Flag award.
