A YOUNG boy who suffers from a muscle-wasting condition has been given a new set of wheels to boost his mobility.
The Inner Wheel Club of Malvern has raised £1,624 to purchase a specialist trike for six-year-old Haydn Moor of Hanley Swan, near Malvern, who suffers from muscular dystrophy and a number of other disabilities.
Haydn and his family were presented with the trike during the club's 65th birthday fellowship lunch at the Worcestershire Golf Club, Woodfarm Road, Malvern Wells, on Wednesday, May 14.
Charmain Selkirk of the club said they raised the funds for the youngster through a bring-and-buy sale, coffee mornings, a collection outside Waitrose in Great Malvern and sponsored walks as part of their Wheels Project.
"It has been such a privilege to be able to give a little joy to a child. We started fundraising in February, so we have done quite well."
The project formed part of the organisation's nationwide 90th birthday celebrations and muscular dystrophy is usually a progressive condition which causes the muscles gradually to weaken over time.
It can either be inherited or occur out of the blue where there is no family history.
The Malvern club is also marking its blue sapphire anniversary by hosting a show of Dominic Mattos as Ethel Merman singing songs from Irving Berlin and Cole Porter at Worcestershire Golf Club on Saturday, June 7 from 7.30pm.
International Inner Wheel is the administrative body that acts as the umbrella for the organisation worldwide and the first club was set up in Manchester by Margarette Golding.
The organisation is active in more than 103 countries and has more than 103,000 members in 3,895 clubs.
