THERE'S often a lot of gloom and doom around sporting achievement - or the lack of it - in the city but Worcester Wolves having been a shining beacon of success this year.

A column in their honour has been a long time coming because, thankfully, the team kept on winning to stretch out the season in great fashion.

In the past couple of years I'd made the trip up to their old home in the St John's sports hall a handful of times and thoroughly enjoyed it each and every time but something really clicked this time around.

I was hooked from the first moment I stepped through the doors of the University of Worcester Arena for the inaugural game against the then reigning champions Leicester Riders right up until the ticker tape fell on the Wembley Arena court after the play-off final victory.

The whole game night experience is wonderfully over the top and offers superb entertainment and brilliant value for money.

So much have I enjoyed the Friday fixtures, a trip to see the Wolves play has replaced the weekly pilgrimage to the pub as my end of week activity of choice.

The shift change in my social calendar has been rewarded with a record-breaking season which saw coach Paul James and his roster of players get their hands on two pieces of silverware.

The first came on mother's day, when the team travelled to Glasgow to secure the BBL Trophy in dramatic fashion.

It was a good job I'd already taken my mum out for a posh afternoon tea because I spent much of the game jumping up and down, yelling at the live stream on a lap top.

There may have been a slight hiccup in the league campaign, with them narrowly missing out on the title, but a day out at Wembley Arena more than made up for that.

A stunning and breathtaking victory over the champions Newcastle Eagles in the play-off final had myself and the rest of the wolf pack jumping for joy - my voice struggled for days afterwards.

Refreshingly, despite all their success, the players seem very humble and well connected to the fans who have turned out in huge numbers at every game.

During the play-off final all their skill and passion came bubbling to the surface in the most enjoyable game of basketball I've had the pleasure of witnessing.

Hopefully much of the team can be kept together because it could be the start of a very promising period for the club.

I can't recommend a night at the arena enough but just make sure you're not there at my expense next year because I can only see attendances rising as they aim to stay at the top of the tree.
