A QUILT will provide a soft landing for wounded soldiers when it is raffled to raise funds to help them battle back to health.

Yvonne Jenkins of Malvern Quilters, an ex-Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC) nursing sister who works at Malvern Community Hospital, donated the quilt to support a team of ex-troops who are taking part in a fundraising cycle ride in June.

Last year, Malvern Quilters gave a quilt to Fisher House at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and this year they are once again supporting our troops by donating it for a raffle to Team Sapper, a tough team of former Royal Engineers and keen cyclists, who have already raised £10,000 for Fisher House. Help for Heroes, in partnership with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity and the US charity, Fisher House Foundation, has delivered Fisher House UK - a ‘home away from home’ for wounded patients and their loved ones.

However, this year Malvern Quilters decided to give the quilt direct to Team Sapper as part of their fundraising drive.

As reported on Tuesday Team Sapper has already raised £100,000 for Help for Heroes over the last five years. The Raffle Draw for the quilt will take place at Shelsley Walsh Cycle Hill Climb on October 5.

There are 946 pieces of fabric in the quilt top. It was all machine sewn, except for the fused diamond shapes in the middle of the "Stars", which were then machine overstitiched with burgundy embroidery thread.

It was machine quilted with a twin needle over the coloured blocks and in the blue border, the cream patches were all free-motion quilted in a 'pebble' pattern. The binding was then applied by machine and hand stitched in place. The 20 strong Team Sapper are setting off on an epic cycle ride from the Battle Back Centre in Lilleshall, Shropshire on Thursday, June 5 to join other riders at Blackheath, London on June 8, a distance of 300 miles. The Bear and Ragged Staff at Bransford is giving them a big send-off on June 5, at the end of their first day's riding. The quilt will be on display at the pub and restaurant and Team Sapper will be grateful if people can make donations to the raffle draw then.
