A WORCESTER mum whose son was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer last year could be seen in the centre of the city on Saturday as she completed a marathon on a cross trainer for charity.

Sarah Hislam was running in Bell Square in CrownGate for three hours as she set off to finish just over 26 miles on a cross trainer in support of CLIC Sargent.

The 49-year-old chose to raise money for CLIC Sargent as they supported her family after her son Tristan Hislam was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma cancer in January last year aged just 22.

He discovered a cancerous growth in his leg after eventually going to the doctors, having put it off for a while. But after a few hospital appointments Mr Hislam discovered he had the rare form of cancer and under had to undergo two operations.

The 23-year-old is now recovered but Mrs Hislam wanted to raise money for the charity that helped them whilst also raising awareness of the organisation and the disease her son battled.

She successfully completed her challenge on Saturday in 2 hours and 55 minutes raising £478 from generous passers-by.

"I was really pleased with how it went," said Mrs Hislam, of Waterworks Road, Barbourne. "My feet were absolutely killing me. I was thinking it was going to take more than three hours but in the end it was just under and I was pleased with the amount we raised on the day."

Mrs Hislam also has an online fundraising site, which has so far been pledged nearly £150.

"I hope it also raises awareness," added the midwife, who works at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

"We had some of the leaflets and information about CLIC Sargent. Some people were stopping and chatting about it."

And on the day Tristan also turned up to support his mum.

"He came in his lunch hour," said Mrs Hislam. "He was proud that I was doing it."

Originally Mrs Hislam had hoped to run the Brighton Marathon but an injury prevented her from doing so.

"I would have liked to do that but I was glad to be able to do this as an alternative," she said. "And I think I will do it again next year."
