Worcester News: HERO HELPER: Heather Oakland HERO HELPER: Heather Oakland

FORMER service personnel who need support and fellowship following injury or sickness while fighting for their country have a new face to turn too.

Heather Oakland has taken up the reins as the new dedicated welfare specialist for the charity Help for Heroes in the Midlands, and will provide direct, practical support for life for heroes and their families.

Mrs Oakland and her team can help with welfare advice, respite, and tickets for treats and events which have been donated by the public.

“We are conscious there are individuals in Herefordshire and Worcestershire who are unsure what support we offer and would love anybody who thinks they are eligible to come forward,” she said.

“Before I joined the team at Help for Heroes I was an avid supporter of the cause and organised many fund raising events. I am thrilled to take on this post and I aim to establish a strong support network.

"I have my own personal experience and understand the welfare issues surrounding military life and the effects it can have on families which is why I am so passionate about doing my bit for our heroes.

“The Band of Brothers and Band of Sisters are lifelong support networks run by Help for Heroes to provide a listening ear, emotional support and fellowship to our heroes and their families.

"Members will be introduced to each other and help to promote the local networks which are so important.”

Open to both male and female members, the Band of Brothers provides life-long support to those with a career limiting /ending injury or illness attributable to service since 2001. The Band of Sisters also provides lifelong support to their loved ones. Details are kept private, there is no commitment and the service is free.
