THE heaven's may have opened but a church summer fayre still managed to put a smile on people's faces.

It may have been a thundery start to St Stephen Church's annual fete but almost 300 people flocked to the church to enjoy he stalls and games on offer on Saturday.

Wet weather forced the bouncy castle to move inside the church on Ombersley Road but organisers still managed to raise just under £4,000 - about £1,000 less than last year when they were blessed with sunshine.

The sun did put in an appearance later on in the day and meant children could enjoy the coconut shy and fairground rides outside.

Judy Hood, church warden and parish administrator, said: "We had to move the bouncy castle inside but it was lovely to see the children's faces when they came in and spotted it.

"It was wet and started thundering and pouring down for the first couple of hours then the sun came out and it brightened up.

"Despite the inclement weather, it was a lovely social event especially when the weather brightened up.

"I would like to thank everyone who came and also helped out throughout the day."
