VISITORS to the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) in Kidderminster can immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of wartime Britain this weekend.

Locomotives will be running intensive ‘evacuation’ services from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth, which will also host a range of period re-enactments, activities, music and entertainment.

The Step Back to the 40s weekend will also feature what is believed to be one of the oldest wooden helter skelters in the world as part of its Blackout Fair, as well as replica air-raid shelters, a replica Spitfire, historic vehicle displays and stalls selling 1940s memorabilia,

Clare Gibbard, SVR’s marketing and communications manager, said: “We can’t wait to transport visitors back in time for this light-hearted but evocative celebration of all things 40s, and with new attractions like the Blackout Fair, there’s even more for visitors to enjoy this year."

A convoy of historic and military vehicles will run Kidderminster to Arley, transporting 'special guests' including Sir Winston Churchill, King George VI and General Montgomery.

The second Step Back to the 1940s weekend will take place on July 5 and July 6.

Visitors can purchase tickets on the day from booking offices or book in advance by visiting www.svr.co.uk or calling 01562 757900.
