THREE men will be going from "source to sauce" with their attempt to hike, bike and paddle along the river Severn.

Over four gruelling days, Luke Simons, Steven Grantham and Chris Hayward, all from Worcestershire, will walk, cycle and canoe 130 miles starting from Plynlimon - where the River Severn begins.

Their mammoth trip to raise money for St Richard's Hospice and Acorns Children's Hospice will end at Worcester - the home of Worcestershire sauce - near to the city bridge.

Mr Simons decided to organise the Source to Sauce challenge in memory of his father John Simons who was cared for by the St Richard's Hospice, Wildwood Drive, Worcester.

Mr Simons' father was a local engineer and a keen football and cricket player before his illness and death in 2013 at the age of 66.

The 36-year-old, a senior account manager for Instore Field Marketing, explained how much the support given to his family by the hospice meant to them.

“My dad spent the last few days of his life at St Richard’s Hospice last year.

"I think the main thing that the hospice allowed us to do was to come to terms with what was going to happen and for everyone to be at peace with it.

“The support once my dad passed away was also great with even the offer of counselling for as long as required.

"It is difficult to explain how much this all meant to us. Some of it may sound trivial, but throughout the darkest time we had dignity, comfort, fun and laughter.”

Mr Simons and his friends are no stranger to charity events having completed a number of long distance walking challenges.

This time, they are set to push themselves to the limit with different physical challenges each day and camping overnight.

Their journey will take them from the Welsh Cambrian mountains, through Shropshire and Worcestershire.

On the first day they will walk 28 hilly miles while the following day will see them swap two feet for two wheels in a 49 mile cycle ride before taking to the water in a canoe for the third day.

Finally, they will be joined by other teams in a Dragon Boat race to the finish line near Worcester Bridge, with boats kindly donated by Worcester Dragon Boat Racing Club.

They will then join friends, corporate sponsors and supporters for a celebration evening at the Old Rectifying House, North Quay, Worcester, on Sunday, July 13.

The evening will include a buffet, a raffle and live music and tickets are available at a suggested minimum donation of £5 by emailing Luke.Simons@instore.co.uk.
