A NEW pizza takeaway is coming to Worcester - despite concerns over litter in the area.

The Farmer's Boy pub in Tolladine Road has secured a massive boost by winning approval for a pizza outlet on-site.

But the expansion of the business is going to come with strict rules on rubbish, with the city council's planning committee saying they are anxious for the area to be kept clean.

Under the plans part of the ground floor has secured a 'change of use' and 24 new parking spaces are being provided next to the takeaway.

It will trade from midday to 11pm seven days a week, matching the opening hours of the actual pub.

The committee voted it through on the grounds the pub places new litter bins "within the curtilage" of the site.

It is the second Worcester pub in the last year to diversify after The Bush Inn, in St John's, turned part of its building into apartments.

Councillor Pat Agar, speaking during the committee meeting, said: "I'd like to know a bit more about the waste situation.

"I know there's been a problem with rubbish blowing over to one side of the terraced houses by the pub already and if we were to approve this I'd want to make sure this didn't happen."

Alan Coleman, the council's senior planning officer, said the authority was "not responsible for commercial rubbish collections" but added: "Now you mention it, that is something I am prepared to take back to the applicant to see if it can be dealt with."

Councillor Roger Knight said: "With any fast food takeaway you undoubtedly need provision for litter bins - I'd like to know if the pub has offered anything."

Mr Coleman said the committee could agree a strict condition on new bins being on-site in return for planning approval.

Cllr Agar added: "It's a good idea but I'd ask if they can be sat back from the main road because they can look unsightly."

Two objections had been handed in from residents, one of whom said car users visiting the pub have been known to block driveways.

But the plan was backed by the committee upon the condition new bins are positioned within the site.
