A FIRE which destroyed part of a children's play area in Droitwich is being treated as suspicious by police.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue service was called to the play area at the Spa Lido Park on Worcester Road at 10.10pm last night.

They extinguished the fire that had consumed the climbing frame and slide, leaving it almost completely destroyed.

Police are now treating the incident as suspicious and would like to speak to several teenage boys who were seen near the scene a short time before the fire began.

Local Chief Inspector Adam Thomas said: “This was a disgraceful and mindless criminal act of vandalism that we very much want to bring the offender to justice for.

"The people of Droitwich deserve to have pleasant and well equipped public spaces to enjoy and the person responsible for this damage has shown total disregard for their community.

“I can assure the people of Droitwich that officers and staff, patrol and Safer Neighbourhoods are jointly following a number of leads in this case and will do all they can to catch the culprit.

“Furthermore, additional covert and overt assets will be deployed to prevent and detect any further offences in the area.”

Police are asking anyone with any further information to contact police on the non-emergency 101 number quoting incident ref 791s of 2nd July.

Absolutely disgusting!! I live in Droitwich and all 3 of my sons played in the play area growing up, my youngest who is 8 still does! Such a terrible thing to do, I myself am in shock, I have always lived in Droitwich and also spent my childhood in St Peters Park and the lido. People seem to be using boredom as an excuse for this, it is rubbish!! my kids are frequently bored and we do not have the money to do lots of clubs etc. but they would never do anything like this!!!There is no excuse!! I hope to god that word gets around who did this and they are made to pay and put it right, as soon as possible, even if the parents have to do it!! I would feel responsible if it was my child who did it!!!! Very sad and very angry!!

I agree with you 100%,absolutely no excuse for it --They must feel really proud of themselves. Kids brag about things like this so I'm confident they will get caught whether they get justly punished we will all have to wait and see

The worrying thing is that the perpetrators will show no guilt or remorse for their actions. Instead, they see this act as some sort of great achievement and honour and will feel good about themsleves, and you know that if ever a hefty sentence (as if that would happen!) it'd would change their mindset. And if it was kids, the boredom excuse is just a cover story as they knew what they were doing and think it's a cool thing to do while also raising their status among their friends. Sadly, this is the society we live in, while a total lack of Police on the beat, and their lack of interest in even deterring crime, doesn't help matters either.

To be quite honest I'm surprised this hasn't happened before. I am a regular user of the park and surrounding fields and during the evenings it has become a bit of a no go area. There are regularly large groups of teenagers drinking and causing trouble but nothing seems to get done. A few years ago I contacted the Police when a group of 20+ youths were drinking and damaging property, it took over a hour for the Police to come by which time everyone had gone. There is practically no Police presence in the town and the kids know it, they know that even if the Police are called it will take a long time for them to come if they even bother.
