NATURE-lovers are needed to join in with a big hunt for wildlife at a Worcestershire farm.

Worcestershire Wildlife Trust is running a 24 hour long BioBlitz event at their headquarters at Lower Smite Farm.

The event takes place between noon on Saturday, July 19 and noon on Sunday, July 20, and it encourages people to see how many species of wildlife they can discover at the farm, which is based between Worcester and Droitwich.

Event organiser, Dominique Cragg, said: “Our BioBlitz promises to be a really exciting event and it will be a great chance to explore the farm and get up close to many different species of wildlife.

“It's a brilliant opportunity for nature-lovers of all ages to hunt for wildlife alongside experts and enthusiasts. The event is carried out for a set length of time – ideally 24 hours – in a specific location and you don’t have to have any experience or identification skills to take part.

“It’s a really fun way of discovering wildlife you may never have seen before as well as increasing your knowledge. But it’s also a really important way of contributing to science – all sightings throughout the event will be recorded and submitted to the Worcestershire Biological Records Centre to help understand the distribution of our wildlife.”

Experts will be on hand to help identify creatures and a series of talks will take place in the evening in the run up to the night-time activities of star gazing and moth trapping.

Miss Cragg said it is hoped that 500 different species will be discovered throughout the day.

She said: “Hopefully people will be inspired to go home and take a closer look at what they’ve got in their garden and in their local neighbourhoods.

"The event will provide a snapshot of the biodiversity at the farm and will hopefully make us all more aware of just how much wildlife is living right alongside us.”

Cakes, ice cream and refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon and visitors can bring their own picnics.

Admission costs £3 for adults and £1.50 for children.

All money raised will go to the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust.
