GENEROUS shoppers at a Worcester supermarket donated bags of food to help families struggling to make ends meet during the summer holidays.

A three-day donation drive at Tesco in Mill Wood Drive saw 3.4 tonnes of food collected for Worcester Food Bank last week.

The organisation, which has provided help to 7,725 people, including 2,700 children, over the past two years, is run by the Trussell Trust, a Christian charity working to stamp out poverty across the UK and in Bulgaria.

The foodbank’s manager Colin Whitehead said the donations were “very generous”.

“This should keep us going until the end of October,” he said.

“We’ve got our busiest period coming up with the school holidays – for a lot of children their free school dinner is their main meal of the day so this can be the tipping point for a lot of families.”

He added Tesco had agreed to donate 30p to the foodbank for every £1 worth of food donated, which will be used to help pay the organisation’s overheads.

To donate to Worcester Food Bank visit the location in Carden Close, Worcester, or drop donations off at the collection box in Tesco.
