A FORMER teacher who proved he had a way with words when he was named Worcestershire's poet laureate has been handed his trophy.
Fergus McGonigal, from Kidderminster, was named as the county's laureate during Worcestershire Literary Festival and received his award at this month's LitFest and Fringe's SpeakEasy.
His poems, one based on the theme prelude to war and the other entitled Drinkers, were praised by festival judges who said the 45-year-old was "a man of many talents".
Mr McGonigal, who MCs at the SpeakEasy, will spend the year representing the festival at public events.
Polly Robinson, festival secretary, said: "Evidently, the spoken word event went very well.
"Fergus has been MCing at SpeakEasy for LitFest for the past year so everyone was delighted to see him awarded with his special trophy."
